~ ~ iiiiii~iiiiniiiiii
999
WEST ADAMS 60 S. 27TH AVE.
SOIL CONSERVATION BRIGHTON, CO. 80601
DISTRICT (303)659-7004
December 20, 1994
Mr. Carl B. Mount
Senior Environmental Protection Specialist RECEIVE D
Division of Minerals and Geology
1313 Sherman St., Rm. 215 JAN 10 1995
Denver, Co. 80203
RE: Dahlia Resources Pit, File No. M-94-093 Divisionuiivunerats&Geology
Dear Mr. Mount:
All issues appear to be adequately addressed by the prepared
plan. However, we still have the following concerns:
We would like to suggest that Russian Olive trees not be
included in the reclamation procedures. Russian Olives have
become vigorous competitors for available resources, and
tend to out compete other desirable species. The loss in
numbers of the Russian Olives could be made up for in
additional plantings of willows and Honey Locust.
We are concerned that dry mining may draw down the
surrounding water table to the detrement of both natural
vegetation and adjacent farm and ranch operations.
Another concern we have with dry mining in this area is the
movement of possible contaminated water away from the Rocky
Mountain Arsenal. The dewatering in this pit, combined with
dewatering in other local pits, may contribute to the
migration of the potentially highly contaminated groundwater
from the Rocky Mountain Arsenal to our area.
In addition, we would like to make you aware that this
mining operation is going to be taking a combination of
Prime and Important Farmland out of production
(approximately 83 acres). Please refer to the enclosed
material for information on Prime and Important Farmlands,
and a map of Important Farmlands of Colorado.
Our board would appreciate the opportunity to discuss our
concerns regarding dry mining with you at any time. Please
call when you have the opportunity. Thank-you.
Sincerely, ~_~c~N~~y~~
West Adams
Soil Conservation District
