DEN ~ ~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
VER OFFICE
PUBLIC FILE COPY
November 14, 1991
FILE: h_q~_~
hfr. Nally Erickson SITE: Stan ~ 9 Aece~
Division of 1\Iinerals ~ Geolog}' ~ ~ a v~XC"i7R'
484 Turner Drive lIOV 171997
Building F, Suite 101
Durango, CO. 81301
Durango Feld Office
phdabn of Minerals & Geology
RE: Comment on Application for a Construction materials Regular Operation
(112) Reclamation Permit by Doren Stone, sole proprietor of an enterprise called
Stone Gravel Pit. Proposed pi[ is located on 1>8.1R acres located on or near Section
12 & 13, Tier 3~ North, Range 1 i West, New Mexico (10f°) Yrutcipal hferidian.
Dear A4r. Erickson
The following is a letter we have sent to h1s. Levem Lemay at the Department of
Natural Resources in regards to a gravel pit being proposed to the west of our home
ut Cortez, CO.
Please let us invoduce ourselves. We are Ric and L}'nda Emerson and our address
is 6066 County Rd. 21. We are on the northeast comer at the intersection of County
Rd. 21 and County Rd. F. This is adjacent and to the cast of the proposed Stone
Gravel Pit.
We request, pursuant to section 2.6.1(1)(b) of the Construction htdustry Rules and
Regulations of the Afined Land Keclamation Board (the "Rules"), that ave be
notified of the date of the informal conference. ~\~e also request, pursuant to Rule
1.=1.6(2), that we be granted party slams and that this comment letter be considered
a "statement of issues" for purpose of the informal conference.
The following is a Gst of our concerns and complaints about the proposed gravel pit
of1\tr. Stone's
1. The performance of our well, trill probably be jeopardized. Mr. Stone has not
stated where his water resources twill be coming from.
2. The wildlife habitat in this area would be disrupted. tVe have recently learned
that this area is a winter hunting ground for the Golden F.agle, the Bald Eagle and
the Great Homed Owl.
3. ~\'e have neighbors suffering with asthma, heart problems, as well as one n•ho is
suffering from cancer. The dust bowl that would be created acould be very
dangerous to these individuals.
4. We do not feel that County Rd. 21 and County Rd. F could handle the heaty
traffic that would be created by the gravel wcks. It is already used by School Busses
and the residents in this area. We feel this would become a very dangerous situation
as the road is too narrow to handle both vehicles.
5. The BLM land being proposed for this gravel pit no[ only has artifacts from the
Anasazi but is used by the community for bike riding, horse back riding, hiking and
the local school for their field day events.
