Box 597 fi GRAVEL MINE AT h~)~;l)
Kiowa, CO 80117 69 fi 94 or.l MILE SOU'fll ~
OF FONDIS IN SEC. 4,
Gentlemen: T105, R62W
The purpose of my letter is to solicit your help and cooperation
in discontinuing the use of the above-referenced open pit mine and
the restoration of such.
A description of this mine is this - it is located due east
of and parallel to Spring Branch, W. Bijou Creek, a perennial stream
which is spring fed. The mine is oriented north-south along a
sandstone escarpment and capped by large Ponderosa pine trees.
They are being up-rooted and destroyed, leaving this area unprotected
from erosion.
The reasons that I would like this mine discontinued are, as
follows:
1. You cannot restore this site to its original appearance
(in 50 years) because you are up-rooting large old Ponderosa
pine trees to mine the sand.
2. This mine is an outrageous "eye-sore" which has devastated
the appearance of one of the most scenic ranchland valleys
in the state.
3. The county has greatly devalued lands adjacent to this mine
and especially along Rd 69 where it is so visible.
4. With a heavy, prolonged downpour of rain, severe erosion
of this soft porous Dawson arkose could carry sediment
down stream and fill-up my stock pond. There was a small
shallow mine on my land, 1 mile North on the same outcrop,
which deposited up to 6' of sand in my creek bottom.
5. Be advised that the expansion and continued use of this
open pit mine "opens-up" The Greater Bijou Basin to similar
operations.
