Section 779.19 (b) Continued.
Rule 4.15.7
Revised 12/3/80
Relative Relative %
Vegetation Total No. Diversity No. Major % of Major of Index per
Type Species Index Species Species * Major Species
Sagebrush-
gravel 23 .776 5 22 68
Sagebrush-
gravel (Ref) 17 .773 4 24 63
Treated Sage-
brush 21 .974 6 29 70
Treated Sage-
brush (Ref) 17 .998 5 29 62
Alkali Sage-
brush 13 .579 4 31 71
Alkali Sage
brush (Ref) 15 .707 4 27 68
* Percent of major species from the total number of species in the
vegetation type.
In terms of diversity, comparisons between indices demonstrate that
there is little difference between premine sites and reference area
locations. It appears that approximately 25% of the species in
each vegetation type or reference area make up approximately 67% of
the index value. This remains true for each location.
The only vegetation type that shows any dissimilarity in indices is
the Alkali Sagebrush. Here again the premine area historically
received heavy grazing as reflected in a lower index value. In
this case it reflects the fact that fewer species dominate more of
the type. Alkali sagebrush and douglas rabbitbrush contribute 507,
of the total index for the premine site, while they comprise only
44% of the reference area. Inversely, pinewood needlegrass, the
major grass in both areas, makes up 12% of the premine site while
it represents 15 Y, for the reference area. Increases in shrub domi-
nance along with decreases in grasses indicates that grazing has
negatively influenced the diversity of the premine site. In spite
779-73 aaa
