1
areas occurs within this soil complex, Comodore soils are a
very stony loam over shallow hard bedrock at 15 to 20 inches;
t the Blackhall soil type is as described previously. About 10
percent of the Comodore-Blackhall complex on the site is rock
t outcrop, and the lower drainages have deep (up to 15 ft) sandy
loam soils. These soil types occur mixed on the site and cannot
be mapped separately. Portions of the soils in this complex
on the mine site can be stripped and are suitable as topsoil.
The limitations are stoniness, rapid runoff, and moderate
erosion hazard, if not protected. The vegetation type on this
soil complex is a pinyon juniper woodland with small stands
' of montane coniferous trees in favorable microsites. The SCS
has listed this complex as a Pinyon Juniper Woodland site.
' I.2.5 Rock River Sandy Loam, Three to Nine Percent Sloaes
' The Rock River sandy 1 oam i s on the fan s and valley
slopes to the west of the foothills in the area of the current
' test heap and office. This soil is formed in deep alluvium from
mixed rock sources, principally sandstone and conglomerate.
' The surface layer is light brown sandy loam five- to eight-
d
20
i
h
hi
k
l
i
b
b
l
l
5
y c
oam 1
-
nc
c
, under
a
n
y a
rown san
ay
- to
es t
inches thick. The substratum to about 60 inches is alight to
' pinkish brown sandy loam. The top 24 inches is suitable as
growth medium, and lower horizons may be used with proper
management and amendments. The vegetation on this soil type
is a sagebrush shrub with little grass cover. The SCS has rated
' this soil as a Valley Bench range site,
I.3 Toasoil Characteristics and Suitability
The soil textures range from sandy loams to clay loams with
' in-place soil showing organic matter and roots in the top 8 to 12
inches. Limitations on use of the soils as topsoiling materials
' include stoniness on the ridges and steep slopes, and moderate
erosion and runoff hazard on disturbed or replaced soil, if not
1
I-6
