Kvaerner Metal ~ Project No. 306900
Gener ecification No. GC-78
Geosynthetic Liner
The subgrade surface. on which the HDPE will be placed. shall be compacted smooth to
the regwred density and shall be free of rocks and sharp particles. Atl such partfctes
shall be removed by raking, broomrng, or hand picking as necessary just prior to the
placement of the liner. The surface shall be inspected and approved by the Engineer.
Horizontal field seams on slopes shall be kept to a minimum. Seams shall be made by
lapping the uphill panels over the downhill panels.
The HDPE panels shall be placed over the prepared subgrade one at a time and shall be
seamed to the adjacent panels immediately after placement. Adequate temporary
anchoring of the panel shall be provided to protect the material from damage due to the
wind. Geotextrle fabric may be regwred under the membrane panels in rough areas,
when requested by the Engineer. All personnel working or walking on the deployed
panels shall wear sofr-sole shoes.
The HDPE shall be installed in a relaxed condition and shall be free of tension or stress
upon completion of the work. Stretching of the matenai to fit. will not be allowed.
Plastic sand bags shall be used. as regwred, to hold the liner panels in position during
installation. flags shall be sufficiently close knit to keep the fines from working through
the bottom. sides or seams of the bags. Each bag shall contain adequate quantity of
sand and shall be tied closed after filling. Sand bags, rf used to ballast the liner, shall be
removed after the joints are fused together and the permanent anchorages are complete.
Continuous loading is required along leading edges of panels. in case of high wind.
Anchor trenches shall be excavated by the Contractor to the lines and grade shown on
the drawings. Slightly rounded edges shall be provided, where HDPE adjoins the trench.
to avoid sharp bends in the material.
Anchor trenches shall be backfilled and compacted as directed by the Engineer. Care
shall be exercised in backfillinq the trenches as to prevent any damage to the liner.
Panel placement shall not proceed at an ambient temperature below a0°F (5°C), or
above 104'F {40'C) as measured at HDPE surface. Deployment shall not be done
during any precipitation. in the presence of excessive moisture, in an area of ponded
water. or rn the times of excessive winds.
Seaming of joints shall be done by extrusion process, using the manufacturer's
recommended procedures and equipment. The surfaces of joint shall be cleaned of
motsture, dust, dirt, debris and oxidation, not mare than one hour prior to welding.
S.U WORKMANSHIP
Prior to commencing the work. Contractor shall certify, in writing, that the surface on
which the HDPE viol be installed is acceptable. Thereafter, it shall be the Contractors
resportsrbitity to maintain the prepared soil surface. Any damage to the subgrade
caused by this installation shall be repaued at Contractors expense. The sod surface
shall be observed daily by the Contractor to evaluate the surface condition. Changes in
~ ~y0wy~ptlhR171~{1Ci1GC101VC OoC. Rw NI 7 Vwr hp~ 1t. 1~
