Monthly Precipitation Pattern
Far more relevant than the long term record and variation is the pattern of monthly precipitation.
This is shown in Figure 2.
These patterns are fairly typical of southern Colorado Front Range patterns (Colorado Springs
excepted). May tends to be fairly wet with a minor drought period in June. In July the monsoon flow
arrives and continues into late August. This produces a major peak in the precipitation during late summer.
The pattern is somewhat favorable to vegetation growth, except for the June drought period. It must be
remembered that Figure 2 shows the average pattern. Individual years may show considerable deviation in
actual amounts, but the pattern remains similar.
Typical vegetation in this area shows a predominance of warm season grasses, but cool season grasses
are also found. The June drought period tends to separate the natural growing season into two parts -the
spring, cool season, and the summer, warm season. During June, cool season grasses in this area tend to
rapidly go into dormancy, but in July are often replaced by strong growths of warm season grasses. This
growth pattern is reflecced in the precipitation patterns.
Monthly Precipitation
Based on Pueblo and corrected for site
2.5
2
I
u 1.5 ~ l ~ I
c ., ~ l i ~ 1
c ~ ~ ~ I
m
~ I I
a I i i i I
~ I ~ ~ ~ '
o .~~ -r T~
Jan Feb Mar Apr May Jun Jul Aug Sep Ocf Nov Dec
Month
Figure 2: Monthly precipitation patterns.
Grisenti Farms Gravel Pit Original Application Exhibit K Page G-4
