Soils in drainage bottoms contain abundant cobbles and gravels while sandstone
bedrock outcrops on ridgetops. Local bedrock is predominantly Upper Cretaceous
sandstones, shales and coal seams of the Lance and Williams Fork Formations.
Miocene and Pliocene sandstones and siltstones of the Browns Park Formation also
outcrop in nearby areas.
FILE SEARCH
A files search was requested from the Colorado Office of Archaeology and
Historic Preservation on October 10, 1994. The cultural resource files of the
BLM Little Snake Resource Area were consulted on October 11, 1994.
The BLM file search indicated that several projects had been conducted in
the area and several sites and isolated finds recorded, both historic and
prehistoric. Lischka (1975) conducted a survey of several proposed railroad
corridors and the COLOWYO mine site. One of his corridors crosses sections 7,
12, 13, 23 & 26 through or near a couple of the drill hole locations (PEDS-3, 9
& 20). One historic site (5MF456) and one isolated find (IF p35) of unknown
composition were recorded by this survey within section 23 near PEDS-3. One
isolated find (IF q36) of unknown composition was also recorded by Lischka in
section 13 near PEDS-9, and another isolated find (IF X34) of unknown composition
was recorded in section 7 near PEDS-20. Jennings and Sullivan (1976) conducted
an reconnaissance survey of the Craig-Rifle transmission line during which they
recorded one isolated find (5MF621) in section 7 near PEDS-20. A survey of
fourteen coal drill holes for the USGS in sections 14, 15, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26 &
27 resulted in no cultural resources being located (Hansen 1978, 1980). A Class
II survey of the Craig to Rifle transmission line in 1981 (Treat and Newkirk
1981), and the survey of six drill pad locations in sections 23, 24 & 25 (Lisckha
1983, 1984) resulted in no cultural resources being located. Davis and Westfall
(1982) in a survey of the Sugerloaf Coal Permit area and Lay Railroad alignment
found one isolated find (5MF1518) in section 7. Hibbits (1984) in a survey of
two seismic lines northwest of the current project area found no cultural
resources. Lennon and Wheeler (1981) conducted a Class III survey of the Craig-
Bonanza transmission line through sections 7, 10, 11 & 12 during which one
isolated find was located in section 7 west of PEDS-20 (5MF2574). None of these
previously cultural recorded resources within the proposed exploration area are
located near any of the current drill hole locations.
Cultural resources overviews have been done for this area and will not be
repeated here. The reader is referred to Husband (1984) and Grady (1984) for
historic and prehistoric overviews of Northwest Colorado.
STATEMENT OF OBJECTIVES
Following the mandated policies implementing the National Historic
Preservation Act (NHPA), as amended, this project was inventoried to locate any
cultural resources within the potential area of effect. Any discovered cultural
resources were to be evaluated for eligibility to the National Register of
Historic Places (NRHP). To be eligible for the National Register, the resource
must retain essential aspects of integrity and meet one or more of the Criteria
