i Y~,
~Gv~aa 1 "r I- a ~Y
W k i N IC.Baa. Q~OJ~ec~-~v
- RECEIVED
Colorado Division of Minerals and Geology JUL t. 8 2003
1313 Sherman Street, Room 215
Denver, CO 80203 / Division of Minerals and Geology
Greetings: ~(/~ - ZO o 3 - 0 3 ~
My husband and I join with the many mem rs of our community who aze very
concerned about the proposed Haldorson and and Gravel Mine which is neaz our
property on Spring Creek Mesa. For those of you who aze not familiaz with this mesa, it
is a beautiful azea consisting of homes, pastures and farms. It is framed on the south with
a breathtaking view of the San Juan Mountains. We fell in love with the area and were
fortunate enough to purchase 200 acres neaz the proposed site.
We farm 110 acres of our land and have devoted the majority of the remaining land to
wildlife habitat. We have a number of ponds for waterfowl and amphibians and aze
replanting habitats for pheasant and quail. We have a wonderful population of wildlife
including deer, fox, badgers, coyotes, chipmunks, squirrel, falcon, owls, hawks, bald
eagles, many varieties of songbirds, various frogs, toads and lizards as well as various
waterfowl and the quail and pheasant. We were at a recent hearing on the mine and
learned of the possible DAMAGE TO THE SPRINGS AND GROUND WATER in the
azea if the mine is operated. Since this would do IRREPARABLE DAMAGE to our
pond system and the water all farmers need for farming we are gravely concerned.
We aze also concerned about the effect the NOISE, DUST and the AIR POLLUTION
from the mine and asphalt plant would have, not only on our wildlife population, but also
on the health, safety and the quality of life of the people who live in the over 600
residences within 1 mile of the proposed mine.
Land like Spring Creek Mesa with its wonderful mix of homes, farms and pastureland is
becoming rare indeed. An asphalt plant, concrete plant, crusher, and mine would forever
Hain the chazacter of the azea.
We respectfully request that the DMG require Haldorson and Son, Inc. to have a
THROROUGH GROUND WATER ASSESSMENT done by an agency qualified to do
HYDROLOGIC INVESTIGATION BEFORE GROUND IS BROKEN. The applicants,
not the taxpayers, should pay for this as well as studies to establish baseline information
on water quality and air quality . We feel that the applicants must show proof that their
operation will in no way alter or impact the operation of existing water rights such as
irrigation rights and springs that would interfere with farming BEFORE A MINING
PERMIT IS ISSUED.
Respectfully,
James and Patricia Whitticom
60780 LaSalle Road
Montrose, CO, 81401
