conventional size do not function properly because of the very slow permea- <br />bility. Use of sandy backfill for the trench and long absorption lines helps <br />to compensate for the very slow permeability. <br />This map unit is in capability subclasses VIe, irrigated and VIe, non- <br />irrigated. It is in Mountain Loam range site. <br />2VF=-Routt loam, 25 to 65 percent slopes. This deep, well drained soil <br />is on mountain side slopes. It formed in mixed colluvium and residuum. <br />Elevation is 7,000 to 8,500 feet. The average annual precipitation is 18 to <br />25 inches, the average annual air temperature is 37 to 40 degrees F, and the <br />frost-free season is 40 to 65 days. <br />Typically, the surface layer is very dark grayish brown to brown loam <br />about 26 inches thick. The upper part of the subsoil is yellowish brown clay <br />loam about 12 inches thick. The lower part of the subsoil to a depth of <br />60 inches or more is yellowish brown and. light yellowish brown silty clay <br />• loam. <br />Included in this unit are small areas of Coutis fine sandy loam, <br />Cochetopa loam and Winevada loam. <br />Permeability of this Routt soil is very slow. Effective rooting depth is <br />60 inches or more. Available water cpacity is high. Runoff is medium, and <br />the hazard of water erosion is high. <br />This unit is used for livestock grazing and wildlife habitat. <br />The potential plant community on this unit is mainly Gambel oak, <br />Saskatoon serviceberry, mountain snowberry, elk sedge, Kentucky bluegrass, <br />nodding bromegrass, slender wheatgrass, and mountain brome. The average <br />annual production of air-dry vegetation is 2,500 pounds. <br />If the range condition deteriorates, less preferred forage plants <br />increase. In poor condition, undesirable plants are dominant. Therefore, <br />Ex. 16-8 <br />
