The soils on the proposed gravel pit site correlate with two distinctive
range sites. ( A range site is a distinctive kind of rangeland that dif-
fers from other kinds of rangeland in its ability to produce a character-
istic natural plant community.) These range sites are Sandy bottom land
(soils 29-AB), and Salt meadow (soils 34).
I ' I Range Sites
Sandy bottom land: The potential native vegetation for this site has a
definite tall grass appearance, dominated by Switchgrass, Indian grass,
Prairie sandreed and Sand bluestem, with smaller amounts of various mid-
grasses such as Side-oats grama, Little bluestem, Needle-and-thread and
i., ~3 Canada wildrye that are scattered throughout. The ground cover is about
40%. The expected annual production in favorable years could be 2,500
I~f~°~
pounds per acre (air dry).
Expected (potential) composition by weight of the principal species may
total as much as:
a s c Percent (air dry weight)
Switchgrass 25
e:'"~3 Sand bluestem 15
Prairie sandreed 12
Indian grass 10
t ~ Little bluestem 5
Side-oats grama 5
Needle-and-thread 5
Canada wildrye 5
Tall sand dropseed 3
i Inland saltgrass 3
.•~ Western wheatgrass 3
Grass like
i
' Sedges 3
Forbs
Perennial (orbs 3
~'i
Salt meadow: The potential native vegetation for this site is Alkali saca-
ton, Switchgrass, Western wheatgrass, Sedges, Alkali bluegrass and Slender
wheatgrass.
