<br />The final slope stability analysis for the Camp Bird Mine <br />tailings pond embankment located at the Camp Bird Mine, Ouray, <br />Colorado, has keen completed. This report will summarize our <br />computer analysis of the stability of the existing tailings <br />pond embankment at the Camp Bird Mine and provide recommenda- <br />tions concerning the construction of the proposed northeastern <br />and western extensions tailings embankments and ponds. <br />Samples of the tailings pond embankment soils were provided <br />to us by Mr. Charles Ponchak of the Camp Bird Colorado, Inc. <br />Camp Bird Mine. Due to the granular nature of the soil and the <br />lack of cohesion, a relative density test was accomplished on <br />the soil. In addition, a standard proctor test was run for <br />comparison purposes. Results of the relative density test and <br />the standard proctor test are included in this report. <br />To determine the effective angle of internal friction of <br />the embankment soils, direct shear tests were accomplished on <br />the soil. Direct shear tests were chosen over triaxial tests <br />for the samples due to the lack of cohesion. The direct shear <br />testing was accomplished on the samples placed at a relative <br />density of 50 percent (unit weight equals 99.4 pounds per <br />cubic foot) and a relative density of 70 percent (unit weight <br />equals 106.6 pounds per cubic foot).
