• 2.5.3 Collection end Analysis of Production Data
Circular plots one meter square in Brea were used for production
estimates. The current year's growth of all herbaceous plants was clipped.
AEI graminoids were cut end sorted by individual species while fortis were
combined into a single category. Each production plot yielded one composite
sample.
In the laboratory, clippings were oven dried et 105oC for 24
hours end weighed to the nearest tenth of a gram. Data were recorded as
grams per square meter (g/m21 end converted to pounds per acre flblacl
using the multiplier of B.91. Statistical adequacy requirements for
production were calculated using the OSM formula above, except that mean
production was used in place of mean cover.
2.6 Plant Species Collection end Identification
Plant species were collected throughout the 1980 growing season.
Species were identified by field ecologists conducting the study and
confirmed by Dr. William A. Weber, Curator of the Herbarium, University
of Colorado. Taxonomic nomenclature follows Weber end Johnston (19791.
Weber 11976), Nickerson et al. (1976), USDA 11979), USFS (1976), end
• Beetle !19701 were consulted in en attempt to apply the most widely utilized
common names. The presence or absence of primary selenium indicators
ere in accordance with WDEQ Guideline No. 2 ns revised March 1979. Noxious
weed designators follow Thornton et el. 119741. Statements of origin or
provenance follow Weber and Johnston (19791 end other sources. Voucher
specimens have been preserved in a reference collection.
2.7 Species Diversity Calculations
Species diversity (richness) indices for each affected and reference
community were determined with the formula
species diversity = s/log N,
where S equals the number of species in a sample end N equals the total
number of individuals Itransectsl in a sample (Whittaker 19751. Equit_
abi{ity indices were determined for each community using the formula
_~ ( N ~ l og (N ~ ,
where ni equals the cover value for each species encountered in a community
end N equals the total vegetation cover in a community.
•
-5-
