•
•

alluvial deposits at or near the outcrop of the Pierre Shale. Existing
well permits in the general area are listed by Table 11, Well Permits -
Permit and Adjacent Areas. Groundwater wells within the mine and loadout
areas include the two (2) Corley wells and the Thompson well.
The Corley Mine Well, located in Section 23, T20S R70W, is permitted to
produce approximately 60 gallons per minute from the abandoned Corley Mine ,
workings in the Vermejo Formation. EFCI, under an agreement with the ~,~
Corley Company has obtained the right to utilize water from the Corley ~ ~ `'~
~~ ;-'~ ;i
Mine Well on an as-needed basis for mining and processing operations. This ~~~ c•~
well and associated abandoned underground mine workings are located ~~~~~''
outside of the angle of draw limit for the proposed Southfield operations ~'`'•~~
and consequently should not be impacted by proposed mining activities.
In addition, beneficial use to date has not resulted in any significant
observed draw-down or reduction in flows.
The Corley Company Well, located in Section 24, T20S R70W, produces
approximately one (1) gallon per minute from the Raton Formation. The
source and corresponding reservoir volume for the Corley Company Well are
unknown, however, it is assumed that the well intersects a perched
groundwater table within the Raton Formation.
The Thompson Well was completed and a well permit issued in 1941. The
well was originally drilled as an exploration borehole for the Rex Carbon
Mine. In conjunction with ongoing operations of the Rex Carbon Mine, the
well was intercepted by active mine workings. In order to preserve well
flows the well was tied into the mine dewatering system. The well was
utilized as a water source for the nearby Thompson Ranch until the
dewatering line was broken by blasting activities associated with a nearby
strip mining operation. At the time of the initial break, the Rex Larbon
workings were still accessible and the waterline was repaired. However,
subsequent to closure and abandonment of the Rex Carbon Mine, the line was
again broken by blasting activities and was inaccessible for repairs. Use
of the Thompson well was subsequently discontinued and associated surface
structures were removed.
~k
a~~,~l~
2.04.7-12
