' STATE OF COLORADO • II I I II I II I II IIII III
Rlehard D. Lamm, Governor ggg
DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES
DIVISION OF WILDLIFE
Jnck R. J, Grand Pre ~-~
Division of Wildlife
SUBJECT: Broderic & Gibbons; Fountain Pit I181-307
DATE: January 28, 1982
•
We are having some difficulty in evaluating this proposal. This
difficulty may be due to the lack of specificity in this application
regarding the location and extent of the gravel deposits. The mining
plan also appears to be incomplete. Further clarification on pit
locations, sizes, depths, and configuration and an estimate of total
land disturbance appears necessary if an accurate evaluation of this
mining and reclamation plan is to be conducted.
One component of this project which may also be worthy of further
consideration is ground wateq. Unless the possibility for ground water
contact is extremely remote, shouldn't a contingency mining and recla-
mation plan be considered?
Reclamation is, of course, the critical factor to be addressed, It
is the only aspect of the mining plan which can mitigate possible wild-
life, soil, and vegetation itgpacts. Elements of reclamation that need
to be considered are regrading disturbed areas to compliment existing
land contours, revegetate with native grass species, construction of
ponds and cachement basins, ahd the planting of native shrubs and trees
in areas of water availability.
If proper land contouring and complete revegetation is achieved,
wildlife concerns will have bt?en satisfactorily addressed.
ag
cc: SE Region
File
DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES, Monte Pascoe, Executive Director • W ILDLIFE COMMISSION, Donald Fernandez, Chairman
James Smith, Vice Chairman • Richard Divelbiss, Secretary • Jean K.
