• III IIIIIIiiilllllli •
999
H%HIBIT $, BTrH DHSCRTpTTON
1. VEGETATION AND SOIL CHARACTERISTICS
The soils of Morgan County are mapped and described in "Soil
Survey Morgan County, Colorado"1. The map identifies the soils in
the proposed mining area as (wt) Wet Alluvial Land. The follow-
ing description appears on page 50:
"Wet alluvial land (Wt) consists oP dark colored soils
on the flood plains oP the larger streams. It lies in
nearly level areas that have slight depressions. Flood-
ing is likely, and the water table normally is within 3
.Peet of the surface. Slopes range Prom 0 to 1 percent.
The surface layer of this land is about 8 to 10 inches
thick and is somewhat similar to the surface layer of
Wann clay loam, saline. Also similar is the substratum.
Between the surface layer and the substratum, however,
the soil material of this land is finer textured and
less permeable than the subsoil oP Wann clay loam,
saline. Sand or sand and gravel are 24 to 40 inches
below the surface of Wet alluvial land.
The native vegetation consists oP rushes, sedges, salt-
grass, and other plants that are tolerant oP water and
salt. Except Por small areas where drainage is slightly
better than normal, this land generally is too wet for
cultivation. Capability unit IVw-12 (irrigated), VIw-1
(dryland); Salt Meadow range site."
Upon inspection, the general description oP the soil and vegeta-
tion appears to apply to the proposed site with the exception
that vegetation includes sweet clover and sun flowers with moder-
ate to dense stands oP cottonwood locally. The lack oP surface
water limits the rushes and march grasses as described above.
--------------------
1. $Q.jj. SIR BY 1LQ.BGAN. COUNTY.
