RECLAMATION NEEDS
1. After mining, operations the following steps are needed:
A. Side slopes should be flatter than 3:1. Slopes of 6:1
or flatter are much more desirable for greater success
in re-establishment of vegetation and operation of
equipment.
B. Excess water from adjacent areas should not be allowed
to flaw onto the area unless erosion control practices
are implemented.
C. Length of slope should be properly controlled to prevent
erosion.
D. Topsoil is needed on sites having exposed soil surfaces
low in organic material, this need increases significantly
iE the sozls are inherently dry sand. Topsoil should be
applied after shaping and tilled to a depth of 6 inches
binding topsoil to existing soil.
2. FERTILIZATION:
A. Fertilization of not less than 40 lbs. of nitrogen and 40
lbs. of phosphous should be applied unless a soil analysis
indicates fufficient amounts of these elements. '
Application of fertilizers should be immediately prior to
or at the time of seeding.
3. MULCHING:
A. Mulching material should be applied immediately before
or after seeding.
B. Either of the two mulching methods listed below would be
acceptable.
1. Grass hay or cerial grain straw should be used at an
application rate of 4,000 lbs./ac. of air dry material.
At least 50% of the mulch by weeght shall be 10 inches
or more in length. Anchor mulch immediately after
distributing with a mulch crimper of disc plow.
2. Application of feedlot or barnyard manure must be of
a type that has 60% or more, by weight, heavy chunks
5 inches or more in diameter. The-minimum rate of
application shall be 20 tons per acre immediately be-
fore or after seeding.
4. GRASSES:
A. Drill grasses in with a grassland drill. The following
species are suggested:
SEE ATTACHED CO-ECS-S GRASS SEEDING PLANNED FORM
*PLS=Pure Live Seed = Bulk lbs. X % germination X % purity
