'~
again act aspseudo-levees, constricting flood flow. Waters just below the constriction
will burst sideways and hit 83-year-old Bill Ortiz or sever Highway 145.
Finally, take all 28 finished or projected gravel pit ponds beriveen Twin Spruce and
Sunnyside and put them in a crap shoot where in a random flood the Dolores will seek
the line of least zesistance and capture a sequence of our man-made holes. The weakened
floodplain from so many pits together could shift the entire river channel to God knows
where. The river could make its final run through downtown Dolores. And all that
disturbed, exposed floodplain could end up at the bottom of McPhee, reducing its storage
capacity overnight.
Conclusion: mine gravel elsewhere. The Colorado Geological Survey has said it might
find funds to map al] tl~e Haycamp gravels if the County requests it. It is gravel about a
million years old, and not so choice as Dolores River gravel. But in this case that would
be the wiser choice.
~l~~~v/~m~~~
