Because the package you sent did not include either a mining or
reclamation plan, we are able to make only preliminary remarks at this time.
We have visited the site and have the following cornnents.
This tract of land is used as habitat by a number of wildlife species. Both
deer and pronghorn antelope use this area extensively. The numerous shrubby
species in the drainage provide habitat Por many songbirds as well as
rabbits. Hawks, owls, and golden eagles would all. use this as a
hunting/feeding area. Prairie dogs, badgers, and other small mammals are also
present in the immediate area. Coyotes would be expected to hunt in this
vicinity.
Obviously, some of these wildlife species will be displaced as mining
proceeds. The degree to which habitat is restored depends on the success oP
the reclamation program. The plan to do reclamation as mining proceeds is a
good idea. We are not sure what is included in "an.appropriate SCS seed mix"
Por reclamation so we cannot comment on that. It would be important to
restore the vegetation to at least its current condition, including the
re-planting and successful establishment oP shrubs. Even more desirable would
be to avoid the shrub stands in the drainage during mining. We would like to
review the actual proposed seed mix before commenting Further. For your
information I am enclosing a copy of an SCS Publication which gives wildlife
values of various plant species.
Please let me know if you need more information.
Sincerely,
Dave Weber
Habitat Biologist
cc: MLRB
DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES, Kenneth Salazar, Executive Director
WILDLIFE COMMISSION, William R.
