C
- ' MINED LAN~ILDLIFE STATEMENT/EVALUATION wised)
for limited impact and select regular mine applications
The following information pertaining to wildlife is provided for use by Mined Land
Reclamation Board in their consideration of a mining permit for:
[')t Prfl ('nnnf y, Graval Pit~S~}NE~ & N3S } S .26, T_2,35 R_5'71N.
Name/Type and Location of Mine (Legal)
Wildlife Species list: Mourning Doves (high use area), Antelope, Badger, Coyote,
Prairie Dog town (fairly close by ), Kit Fox, Red Fox, Skunk, Jackrabbit (black=tailed),
Cottontail Rabbit, Magpie, Various Raptors--mainly Marsh Hawk, Sparrow Hawk, Prairie
Falcon, Swainson's Hawk, Ferruginous Hawk, Various Songbirds, possible range for
Roadrunner, etc. Scaled Quail have been found in this area, but none are now present.
There is a large rodent population as well as Bull Snake and Prairie Rattlesnake.
Endangered/critical species/impacted: None known in the area at the present time.
Critical habitats/vegetative communities impacted: Shortgrass habitat will be the
major area impacted with loss to wildlife species which depend on this for survival.
The gravel operation will improve one major game species, mourning dove, as established
pits near this site are used heavily for graveling areas in late summer and early fall.
Assessment of impact: As this is not a high wildlife use area the impact will not
be as critical as it could be. Some ground will be lost to the open pit operation,
but this will improve the interspersion of the habitats and while same species will
suffer other species will benefit from the operation.
Mine Reclamation recommendations (include key species/habitats for which restoration
is designed). Topsoil should be placed on areas of the site as soon as the removal
operation is completed. Fences should be erected around these areas to keep live-
stock off of them. This will give air extended time period for grasses to become
established. Small depressions (100 X 200 feet) should be left and brush species
planted in them to improve habitat for scaled quail and cottontail rabbit.
Prepared By: Gordon East. District Wildlife Manager Date:~,/~0/£3l
Submitted Bv: Date:
This statement is void if not processed within 1 year.
This analysis does not constitute approval of application.
..
