EXHIBIT 38 - Continued.
Soil moisture conditions, and the extent of the capillary fringe in
particular, depend on the lithology and characteristics of the alluvium
containing the water table. Clay materials are capable of high moisture
retention, while an aggregate has almost no retention capability, be-
cause of the difference in porosity of the two materials. Thus, the
capillary fringe in alluvium consisting of clay will extend farther
above the water table than that of alluvium consisting of gravel. In
addition, the interface between one lithology and another within the
alluvium has a dramatic effect on moisture content. Even the interface
between the A and B soil horizons can affect the amount of moisture
available within the root zone.
To document the above effects on soil mo
• topsoil thickness, root depth, and water table
alluvial wells was applied to the data collected
access tubes. Specifically, information was used
Draw, well AL-1 on Williams Draw, and well AM-4
isture, information on
elevation from nearby
from the neutron probe
from well AI-1 on Bush
on Sudduth Draw. The
location of the alluvial wells is shown on Map 15, Kerr Mine Area Ground
[Dater Hydrology. A11 of the above information is graphically presented
in this Exhibit in Figure 1, Soil Moisture Logs. The raw data collected
were interpreted considering site-specific conditions of lithology,
topsoil, roots and alluvial water. These logs are discussed below.
The soil moisture conditions in the intermittent drainages of
Bolton, Bush, Williams and Sudduth Draw were found to be very similar.
These logs were adjusted only to correct for anomalies in the raw data
caused by the topsoil-alluvium interface and water table elevation,
since the lithology at all four locations was identical. When adjusted
for site-specific conditions, the logs of Bolton, Bush and lilliams Draw
show an increase in soil moisture in the interval below the root zone
•
