Coulson Excavation Company Inc. -Stroh Gravel Pit
Exhibit E -Reclamation Plan
measurements that field moisture conditions are 3 to 4 % wetter than optimum. The lift will be
allowed to dry to the point of optimal moisture before compaction will begin. The field inspector
will calculate the drying rate as the day progresses and measure field moisture content. Water
will be added or lifts will be allowed to dry as needed to maintain optimal moisture content
throughout the compaction process. The volume of water needed to raise the moisture content by
l % has been calculated to be about 7,546 gallons for two acres.
Topsoil Replacement
Approximately 51,853 yd3 of topsoil will be replaced along the perimeters of the ponds at a
maximum depth of approximately 2 ft. After all topsoil has been re-spread, the land will be
seeded with a native seed mix as described below.
Seeding and Fertilizing
Currently, irrigated hayfields are grazed during the winter months. Dominant plant species
include a mixture of both smooth brome (Bromopsis inermis) and orchazdgrass (Dactylis
glomerata). Hayfields are irrigated three times per year in the spring, summer and fall, and hay
is cut in June.
At present, the pasture is grazed al] year around. Cover in the pasture is sparse all year as a result
of the continuous grazing by approximate]y 100 head of cattle. Dominant plant species include
red fescue (Festuca rubra) and intermediate wheatgrass (Thinopyrum intermedium).
Approximately 63 acres of the south zone will be reclaimed to ponds and the remaining 43 acres
will be re-seeded. The recommended seeding method is by drill and seeding rates assume this
method. The species composition of the seed mixture recommended for reclamation is shown in
Table 2 below.
Table 2
Species (Variety) Rate -pure live seed Native/ W/C Cost
(pls) Introduced Season pls/ac
[bs/ac
Thickspike wheatgrass (Critana) 8.0 to 10.0 Native Cool $11.70 ~
Sideoats grama (Vaughn) 5.0 to 7.0 Native Warm $7.25
Switchgrass (Nebraska-28) 4.0 to 6.0 Native Warm $5.00 4
4
Alfalfa (Nomad) 3.0 to 5.0 Introduced NA $1.90
TOTAL 20.0 to 28.0 $28.85
Based on this seed mixture an application rate of approximately 20.0 to 28.0 pls/ac will be used.
Topsoil should be disked prior to seeding. The estimated cost of disking is $60 to $80/ac. It is
recommended that fertilizer be utilized for reclamation. A standard application of a fertilizer will
be used and applied at a rate of 250 lbs/ac as shown in Table 3.
