CO-CPA-1
6/89
..180-12-11) CAPAL'•ILITY GI:QUI'S QF Sr_~ILS
Capability classification is grouping i~f soils to show in a general way, them
suitability for most kinds of fanning. It is a practical classifcation based
limil:ation5 of the soil, the ris1: of damage when they arc used and the way the
respond to treatment. The soils are classified according to degree and kind
permanent limitation, but with~~ut consideration of major and general er.pensivr
landforming that would change the slope, depth, or other characteristics of th
soils; and without condideration of possible L~u1: unlikely major recrmation
projects.
Foman umerals are used to show the 3 broad Capability Classes and letters fol.
the class numeral to indicataed the principal problem or hazard. Classes and
sub-classes used are as follows:
Class I - Few or no limitations that restrict choice of crops or require
conservation measures.
Class II - Some limitations that reduce the ct~vice of crops or require modera
conservation measures.
Class III - Severe limitations that reduce choice of crops or require special
conservation practices or both.
lass IV - Very severe limitation that restrict the choic of crops. require vc
careful management, or both.
Class V - Not suited for cultivation but has few or ne hazards when used for
pasuture, range, woodland or wildlife.
Class VI - Not suited for cultivation. Very severe limitations. Suited for
range, pasture, woodland or wildlife with careful management and needed
c.onseravtien practices.
Class VII - Not suited for cultivation. very severe limitations. Suited for
range, woodland or wildlife use if carefully managed. Usually cannot apply
physical practices such a5 pitting, furrowing seeding, etc.
Cass VIII - Not suited far cultivation, range, pasture or woodland. Suited on
for recreation, wildlife, water supply esthetic purposses.
e - Erosion by wind or water is the major problcrn
w - Er:cessive water such as wetness, overflow or high water table.
s - Major problem is in the soil. It may be to shallow, too heavy, stony, low
fertility, salty, alkaline or have low moisture capacity.
c - Climate is the major hazard. Growing season may be very short, they is a
shortage of rainfall or both.
~aamples:
~ IIIe - Class III land where erosion is the major hazard.
IVc - Class IV land where the climate is the major problcrn.
