n
U
-3-

SAMPLE DESIGN
A field reconnaissarux was perforned in Nay, 1979 to determine the boun-
daries of all affected areas, determine the number of different vege- _
tatton Lypes which could require sampling and identify reference sites
for eadi vegetation type in areas not to be disturbed by future miniig
activity. Five vegetation types occur within the sWdy area: these
are bland sagebrush, grassland pasture, juniper, riparian and agricul-
- total (hay meadow). A brief description of each type follows:
1. Upland sagebrush -~Artanisia tridentate (Basin big sagebrush) doim-
inatsd cammniities occurring on.well-drairnd slopes that because of
shallow soils have rot been converted to agricultural production.
• 2. Grassland (pasture) 'Areas of abandoned pasture ocmprised lazgely
of wheatgrass (#~i-o sp.), brama (Brews sp.), fescue (Festuca sp.),.
plantain (Plentago sp.) and alfalfa (Medicago sativa).
3. Agricarlatural -Primarily morocultures of alfalfa.
4. Juniix~s - A small oamunzity of Utah juniper (JUniperus ostEOSperma)
occurring wlttriin the agricultural type.
5. Riparian - A shall oGmwnity along an irrigation ditch characterized
by comron cattail (1~iha latifolia) and baltic rush'(JUncus balticus).
Several narxowleaf cottoncood (P~ilus atpusti£olia), plains oottnnHOOd
(~ sargentii), (9ninese elm (LJlnms parviflora) aid saltcellar
tamarisk (Tamarix ~pestandara) trees occurred along this type.
The agricultural hay_meado.+ was rot quantitatively sanQled to obtain vege-.
tative Dover and Production estimates. Wyoming DEQ reca<mplds that in cases
where coops are taken each year, quantitative vegetative sampling is unneces- .
sary since the species oomgosition, rover and production of cultivated
areas can be ascertained in other ways such as intervied of the farnwr,
..) ..
• (Revised March 2006) Attachment 2.05.6(2)-1-8
