HEPWORTH - PAWLAK GEOTEC• CAL, INC.
December 11, 1997
Roaring Fork Resources
Attn: Dick Stephenson
P.O. Box 1220
Carbondale, Colorado 81623 lob No. 197 682
Subject: Report Transmittal, Geotechnical Stability Study, Proposed Schmidt
Property Gravel Pit, Highway 6 & 24, East of Gypsum, Eagle County,
Colorado
Dear Mr. Stephenson:
As requested, we have conducted a study of the geologic and subsurface conditions at
the subject site.
Geologic conditions which could make the project infeasible were not encountered.
The potential affects of sinkholes and erosion should be considered during the mining
operation. Subsurface conditions encountered in the exploratory borings drilled
throughout the proposed mining area consist of 'fz to 8'/z feet of topsoil, clay and si{ty
sand overlying dense gravel terrace deposits. Groundwater was not encountered in the
borings to the drilled depths of 3'/z to 15'/z feet.
The proposed final pit wall slopes of 2: I (horizontal to vertical) or flatter should have
adequate stability provided they are drained and protected against erosion. The
Stremme and Gates Ditch will probably need to be piped through Phases 4, 5 and 6 so
that leakage does not potentially affect long term slope stability.
The report which follows describes our exploration, summarizes our findings, and
presents our conclusions and recommendations. We should provide additional
consultation as needed during the mining operation to review and monitor the
implementation of the geotechnical recommendations.
If you have any questions regazding this report, please contact us.
Sincerely,
HEPWORTH - PAWLAK GEOTECHN[CAL, INC.
~i~'~L" _ ""_
Steven L.
