Stockpiles, roadsides and other disturbed areas were hydromulched in
late fall, 1980, for erosion control. Some of these areas were seeded
if further construction disturbance was considered unlikely. Either
seed Mixture Number 5 or the pasture mix (see Tables 4.4.2-8 and
4.4.2-9) was used, depending on whether the areas will be irrigated or
not.
In the spring of 1981, final earthwork, grading and tilling for
landscaping was done. This involved changing the shapes of the stock-
piles as shown in drawing D-4-14. Some feathering of the edges of the
stockpiles was done for aesthetic reasons, but discrete piles will
still be maintained and topsoil availability will not be jeopardized,
Fine tilling and grading with smaller equipment will be done as
required by the landscape plan.
Trees and shrubs were planted as balled-and-burlapped or canned nur-
• sery stock.
The irrigation equipment installed to establish the plantings of the
interim reclamation plan at the loadout area is an innovative, water
conservation system. This irrigation system delivers well water
acquired on the site directly to each plant indicated on the planting
plan. Lateral lines are imbedded in the earthen berms and emitters
sized for each plant species' water needs are placed in the saucer
shaped basins at the base of each plant. Eventually, revegetation
plantings will become established on the site like any naturally
occuring plant and will tap soil moisture reducing the need for long-
term irrigation.
Besides quick revegetation, other measures will be taken as part of
the Interim Reclamation Plan to control erosion. Structures to
control and contain runoff as specified in the drainage and sediment
control plan will be inspected regularly and maintained as required.
. Erosion bales, netting, other diversion structures, and so on, will be
employed during the life of the operation in accordance with good soil
conservation practices.
4-79
