~• REPORT ON STABILITY ANALYSES
AND
RECOMMENDATIONS FOR RECLAIMID
SDRFACE FACILITIES
AT THE
MT. GIINNLSUN NO. 1 MINE
L SCOPE AND OBJECTIVE
The ARCO Coe1 Company, a division of Atlantic Richfield Company, intends to build and
operate a .250 million ton per year coal mine on its ML Gunnison property near Somerset,
Colorado. The ARCO Coel Company is committed to the development, operation and
reclamation of this mine in en environmentally sound manner. The Oifice of Surface
Mining (OSM) and the Mined Land Reclamation Board require that the site be returned to
its approximate original condition at the conclusion of all mining activities. It is the
ARCO Coal Company's present intent that the surface facilities shall be removed or
dLsposed at that time, and that the site shall be returned to its approximate original
condition end approximate original contours (AOC). An investigation has been made to
evaluate the procedures for reclaiming certain surface Pacilities that have been planned
and that lie within an area designated for potential slide activity. It is the purpose of this
report to summarize this investigation end to make recommendations for the reclamation
of these and other related surface facilities at this site.
(• The surface facilities that have been planned and which lie within the area .designated for
' ~ potential slide activity include a section of the main access road, the portal bench, the
substation end the shop warehouse (refer to the Site Plan reference sheet). A dewatering
system has been investigated and it will be installed to stabilize the sites of these planned
facilities during the proposed construction and the operational life of the mine. The
reclamation of these sites requires special consideration in order that these areas remain
stable after the site has been returned to its approximate original condition Merrick $
Company has conducted an extensive analysis of various alternatives for reclaiming and
restoring these and the related areas to ensure a stability factor of safety of 1.3 or
greater.
This report contains recommendations on the procedures to be followed for reclaiming
those areas within the said Landslide Boundary. Our recommendations are based on the
results of extensive Slope Stability Investigations. Tn addition, recommendations are
included in this report Por the disposal and reclamation procedure to be followed for other
related surface facilities which lie outside the Landslide Boundary. Topsoil spreading and
revegetation recommendations ere beyond the scope of this report except as they apply to
reclamation of the facilities within the Landslide Boundary. The reader should refer to
the Mining end Reclamation Plan for further information on topsoil spreading and
revegetation.
(.
