2.06 Requirements for Permits for Special
Categories of Mining

2.06.1 Scope
The following sections of this permit document present a description of the operations at the West
Elk Mine that are considered special categories of mining.
2.06.2 Experimental Mining Practices
The West Elk Mine produces coal using standard room and pillar and longwall techniques. As a
result, the provisions contained in the regulations for experimental mining practices do not apply.
2.06.3 Mountaintop Removal Mining
Because the West Elk Mine is an underground mine, the provisions contained in the regulations for
mountaintop removal do not apply.
2.06.4 Steep Slope Mining
Because the West Elk Mine is an underground mine, the provisions contained in the regulations for
steep slope mining do not apply.
2.06.5 Permits Incorporating Variances from Approximate
Original Contour Restoration Requirements for Steep
Slope Mining
Because the West Elk Mine is an underground mine, the provisions contained in the regulations for
steep slope mining do not apply.
2.06.6 Prime Farmlands
Alo prime farmlands have been disturbed by mining activities at the West Elk Mine.
