_ III IIIIIIIIIIIIIIII
• fIF 2.02 GENERAL REQUIREMENTS FOR COAL EXPLORATION _ ___
Doc Date:12111/2001
2.02.1 SCOPE
This section establishes requirements for coal exploration outside an
approved permit area. It is intended to insure that exploration and
related activities are conducted so as to protect environmental values and
effect compliance with applicable regulatory provisions.
2.02.2 EXPLORATION INVOLVING REMOVAL OF 250 TONS OR LESS Of COAL
EFCI has developed an ongoing exploration program designed to accurately
delineate available coal reserves and to provide planning and operational
information on coal depth, thickness, quality and geologic conditions.
The present exploration program includes rotary drilling, coring, and
laboratory analysis of core samples taken ahead of the mining advance.
,EFCI also utilizes underground channel sampling and geophysical methods
to supplement drilling information.
Most of the historical exploration has been limited to permitted mining
areas. However, as EFCI approaches the limits of known minable reserves,
it is anticipated that exploration will extend beyond the permitted area.
Future exploration will focus on potential extension of existing
operations in the Red Arrow and Jack O'Lantern seams, and
identification/quantification of other economically minable coal seams or
separate reserve blocks.
Because of the depth of major coal seams in the Southfield mine area and
extensive historical mining which has occurred, no bulk sampling is
anticipated. Future exploration is expected to involve rotary drilling
and coring with recovery of substantially less than 250 tons of coal.

2.02-1
