WATER INFORMATION
III IIIIIIIIIIIIIIII
999
~ c~~olL
5~ EXHIBIT G

(~ ~t2c4 rr FZ ~--e.
C~
J
•
1. Groundwater Baseline Information
Springs in the unnamed channel
It is expected that the operation will be a dry mining operation since it will operate on the second
terrace above the Eagle River. A few springs, however, have been found in the unnamed drainage
which flow directly in response to flows from the Stremme and Gates irrigation ditch.. This ditch is
located approximately 1/3 mile to the south of the permit area. Map Exhibit C-2 shows the location
of the springs in the unnamed drainage. Site investigations conducted on April 16, 1996 showed no
spring flows to the unnamed drainage, it is believed that the flows are caused by irrigation seepage
from the Stremme Gates ditch located uphill and south of the property. The flows seem to take
place only when the irrigation water is running and seem to vary from 2 to 20 gallons per minute.
Flows were seen in the drainage during the stunmer of 1996 and during inspections in September. If
the flows were the result of natural springs, the April 1996 site investigation would have likely
shown flows, when groundwater levels are usually at their highest. No flows or wet conditions of
any kind were found at that time. The seepage likely enters the porous gravel zone and travels
along the top of the less permeable shale zone immediately below the gravel until the surface is
encountered near the outlet of the springs. It is possible that the springs are shallow and may be
encountered during excavation of the pit area on the south side of the property. Water quality
appears similar to that of the surface water flows in the area, with pH slightly above 7 and relatively
high dissolved solids, but adequate for livestock and irrigation use. This also supports the notion
that the flows are coming from the Stremme & Gates ditch since this water is taken directly from
the Eagle River, which has similar quality.
Carol Ann Permit CDMG Application
37
