Farrell:
Attached you will find results of acid base potential tests and
DPTA extract for metals on AT settling pond sludge and Tailings
Pond #4 slimes, as requested in your January 6, 1989 let=er, It
was not possible to sample the Tailings Pond #3 slimes because of
ice and snow cover and the accumulation of AT and Terr,~ sludge
deposited at the site.
The requested interim disposal of the AT sludge in Tailings
Pond #4 has been approximately SO percent completed. The cold
weather, frequent snowstorms and equipment breakdocans have
hindered our progress on this project. We are maintaining our
water quality, but need to complete the project. We have
experienced no detectable quality changes in our Tailings Pond #4
water discharge that could be associated with this project.
From the acid base potential tests performed on the sludge, it
appears that it has enough residual lime in it to actually act as
a buffering agent for the tailings pond. The metals DPTA
extracts show relative equivalent concentrations to the Tailings
Pond #4 slimes except for zinc and cadmium.
We are currently evaluati
AT and Terry sludge for
information obtained from
disposal in Tailings Pond
our list of alternatives,
the Division agrees.
ng permanent options for dispo~.al of the
submittal to the Division. From the
these tests, we believe that permanent
#4 might be a viable option i:o add to
and would welcome your input on whether
