Proposed Hydrological Monitoring Plan
for the
New Horizon Mine 2
Introduction and Summary
The purpose of this report is twofold. First, the report presents a review of the e~dsting
hydrological monitoring data of the Nucla Fast mme site, now known as the New Horizon
Mine 2 and presents an update of the environmental consequences for the new mine plan.
Second, the report recommends a revision of the hydrological monitoring program m better
fit the new mint plans which have been developed. Information reviewed includes surface
and groundwater data collected during the period of recerd (July 1986 to February 1990).
Recommendations are made regarding the location of surface water stations and
groundwater wells in the area to potentially be effected by mining. Data collections are also
recommended for each of the sampling stations. These include monitoring requirements of
the water augmentation plan required by the Colorado Co-operative Company.
Existing Data Review
• The data summarized in this report was collected from approved monitoring sites in
accordance with Permit No. C-81-008. The data encompass the period of July 1986 through
February 1990. In February 1990, the permit was revised to eliminate hydrologic monitoring
during temporary cessation of operations at the Nuda East Mine site. Since the mine plan
currently proposed by Western Fuels has changed from that originally proposed by Peabody,
several of the monitoring stations are proposed to be eliminated or relocated to more
appropriately monitor the potential effects of mining oa the hydrologic balance. As a result,
only those monitoring points which are proposed to remain in the program will be
considered in this evaluation.
Surface Water Monitoring
There are seven surface water monitoring stations located within the New Horizon Mine 2
watershed, site SW-N101 through SW-N107. Table 1 desmbes the locations and the type
of flow measurement performed at each of the sites (also see Map 204.7-i} Surface water. _ .,. _
flow dais collected from sites SW-N101, SW N102, SW-N104, and SW-N105 are contained
in Appendix A. Minimums and ma~dmums for each station aze shown in Table Z for the
irrigation season and non-irrigation season For stations SW-N101 located on Calamity
Draw, flow varied from 0.4 cfs to 2.0 cfs during the non-irrigation season and 4.2 cfs to 13.4
cfs during the irrigation season For station SW-N1021ocated on the tributary of Calamity
Draw which passes through the area to be mined, flow varied from OA to 0.6 cfs during the
•
Attachment 2.04.7-5-23
