The configuration of this tract of lgnd also shows a 100 foot wide strip of
land parallel to the Colorado River ~ the only barrier for the River to
retain its existinP channel., ,This is totally inadequate. The base of this
strip is gravel that will be mated, Sitting loosely on the underlying
Mancos shales there is no staty in it. Due to the impervious nature of
this shales the water (river) caA~_change course at its will (volume.) which
it will do during the next high xa*r period. The river can not lower its
gradr_ in the Mancos shale in less than hundreds of years so nearby surface
area:3 will be altered to the detriment of nearly all nearby residents.
When you review this application, p],~8se look not only xhere the pit is
locai;ed (along a rivers but the local geology, local topography that lends
itself to a movement by the river to the north. Corn Construction had to
dynamite portions of the river bank east of 31 road to keep the river from
moving northward during the 1983 him-water runoff and just did hold the
channel in that location. It will happen again. This is not speculation
it is fact.
No new jobs nor any jobs now existing will be jeopordized if the permit
is denied and there is no economic crises for United Companies, The crises
will be for nearby land owners (with the life investments in land and residences
and others along 30 Road who will be subject to flooding after the Colorado
River makes a new channel through the proposed gravel pit,
Do not approve this proposed pit recl`mation permit. ILre you as reviewers
and the State willing to accept the finacial obligations ,your approval will
create the adjacent property owners? Most of us have spent our life savings
buyin=, our land and residences and we feel. we should not have to be the ones
to lo~ee everything because of in inappropriate location of a gravel pit.
Respe~;tfully~
~` O
Gilbert R. Wenger
392 3C~ Road
Grand Junction, Co. 81504
