Is
• was considered infiltration. Each run was continued until the amount of
runoff approached a constant value, generally fora period of thirty
to forty-five minutes.
Site and Individual Plot Characteristics
A site is considered a regraded area at a specific mine or part of
a mine. Descriptive characteristics obtained for each site include coal
region, coal field, year regraded, year seeded, topography, geologic
derivation of spoils, elevation, native soils classification, pre-mine
land use, native vegetation, surface manipulation, evidence of erosion,
degree of effective mulch cover, a qualitative estimate of the amount of
sediment produced by the infiltrometer runs, and maximum 2 year - 30
minute and 2 year - 24 hour storms. Additional climatic data obtained
• for each site were mean annual precipitation, mean growing season (May-
October) precipitation, mean annual snowfall, mean annual temperature,.
mean January temperature, and mean July temperature.
Generally, six replications of infiltration runs were performed at
each site. Individual plot characteristics recorded included slope
gradient, depth of topsoil, depth of wetting after the infiltration run,-
temperature of the water of the applied rain, and an estimate of surface
cover consisting of percent vegetation cover, percent surface stone, and
percent bare soil. Additionally, topsoil and spoils samples, and core
samples of the topsoil and spoils were taken from each plot for labora-
tory measurements. (Sample site and plot characteristics are summarized
in Appendix A, topsoil and spoils characteristics are summarized in
• Appendix B, and infiltration data are summarized in Appendix C.)
