DE~IPTION OF WATER RESOURCES.
Ground Water
iiiiiiiiiiiuiiiiii
sss
Ground water occurs cinder the property in the alluvial
deposits of sand and gravel which underlie the floodplain
of the South Platte River (Figure 2). The sand and gravel
deposits range in thickness from less than one foot on the
western part of the property to more than 25 feet in the
central part of the property. The deposits are 15-20 feet
thick on the eastern side~of the property near the South
Platte River. Ground water in the sands and gravels flows to
the northeast, toward and along the course of the South Platte
River. Most of the flow in the river duricig the late summer
months is derived from ground water discharged from the allu-
vial deposits. In recent years, wells have been constructed
in the sands and gravels to provide water for irrigation
and other uses. Properly constructed wells in the vicinity
of the mining site could produce as much as 1000 gallons per
minute (gpm).
Numerous wells have been developed in the vicinity of
t11e mining site (F~gure 2). Most of the w~_LS on the pro-
perty have been developed for irrigation usage; there are
five irrigation wells within or adjacent to the mining site.
The wells that surround the property, principally on the
west, have been developed for domes~ic usage. All the
homes west of the Riverdale Road have irdividial wells. Some
of the domestic wells may be used for lawn irrigation or
stock watering. Except for a domestic well and an irri-
gation well located in the NW of the NE; of Section 34
which belongs to a private landowner, the wells on or within
the vicinity of the mining site either were purchased or
were developed by the County to provide water for use in
the Fairground. complex. The domestic wells are permitted
for 15 gpm and the irrigation wells are permitted for dis-
charges ranging from 300-1000 gpm.
There are approximately nine deep wells in the vicinity
of the mining site. These range in depth from 312 feet
to 510 feet beneath the laud surface and withdraw water
from the aquifers in the Dawson and Arapahoe Formations and
the Laramie-Fox Ili11s Sandstone. Some of the domestic wells
on the western edge of the property penetrate these aquifers.
Ground water in these deep aquifers is confined and is separated
from the ground water in the sands and gravels by thick layers
of clay and shale. Water use from the deep aquifers is
not affected by water use in the shallow aquifers. water
levels in these deep wells can be as much as 20 to 40 feet
beneath the land surface. [+lell yields are generally low,
ranging from 10 to 60 gpm. R ~C ~~ V E
NOV -41911
-3 MINED LAND RECLAMATION
Colo. Dept. of Natural Resources
