Proposed Conveyor Crossing of Brighton Road
Proposed Crossing Location
At the site of the proposed Tanabe conveyor crossing, the Brighton Road right-of--way is 80
feet wide, including a 20-foot dedication where the Howe Pit permit area abuts the road right-
of--way. The asphalt-paved surface of Brighton Road is approximately 25 feet wide, with
gravel shoulders approximately 20 feet wide on the west side and IS feet wide on the east
side. The pavement centerline appears to be offset approximately 2.5 feet to the east of the
right-of--way centerline. The right-of--way is bounded by fences, with the exception of the
east side to the north of the proposed crossing point. The existing ground is relatively level
for some distance on either side of the right-of--way at this proposed crossing location. To the
east of the right-of--way, the ground is at approximately the same elevation as the road
surface. To the west, the ground surface is approximately one foot below the road elevation.
Overhead power lines are located on the east side of the right-of--way, approximately four
feet from the edge of the right-of--way. The cross arm on the power poles, supporting three
conductors, is approximately 28 feet above the ground surface, and a lower single conductor
is mounted directly on the poles approximately 21 feet above the ground. An overhead
telephone line is located along the west side of the road, approximately 3.5 feet from the edge
of the right-of--way. The conductor cable is mounted directly on the poles at a height of
approximately 16 feet above the ground surface.
Underground utilities within the road right-of--way at this proposed crossing location include
a sanitary sewer force main, a water main, and glow-pressure gas pipeline. The sewer force
main is a 16-inch diameter PVC line, located along the west side of the road, approximately
ten feet in from the west right-of--way boundary and at a depth to invert of approximately six
feet. The water main is a 12-inch diameter PVC line located along the east side of the road,
approximately eight feet in from the east right-of--way boundary and at a depth to invert of
approximately 5.5 feet. The low-pressure gas line is on the east side of the road within the
right-of--way boundary. Observations made during operation of the Howe pit indicate that the
water table in the vicinity of the proposed crossing is approximately five to six feet below
grade. There is also a gas line along the west side of Brighton Road.
Details of the existing development within the road right-of--way in the vicinity of the
proposed Tanabe crossing, as well as the outline of the proposed crossing structure, are
shown Figure 2, "Tanabe Crossing -Plan and Section".
Details of the Proposed Overhead Conveyor Crossing
The proposed bridge structure to support the aggregate conveyor and water piping across the
road will be similar in size and appearance to the prefabricated pedestrian bridges that are
commonly installed over busy traffic condors and/or streams.
The main span of the conveyor bridge will be a box truss, with maximum outside dimensions
of eight feet high and eight feet wide. It is proposed that the structural elements of the box
truss be manufacrured of Cor-Ten weathering steel. The truss will be supported on structural
steel columns of similar material, founded on cast-in-place concrete foundations, and will
