INTRODUCTION
~~
This soil inventory was conducted by VTN and by the environmental
engineer employed by Yampa Mining Co. who is a soil scientist. Much of
the soil classification and mapping was done by the Sail Conservation
Service (SCS). VTN Colorado, Inc. and the environmental engineer at
Yampa Mining Co. conducted some of the soil de scriptions and mapping and
all of the soil sampling and interpretation. The soil samples taken by VTN
were tested by Colorado Analytical Labs and the samples taken by the
environmental engineer at Yampa Mining Co. were tested by Camp, Dresser
and McKee Inc.
METHODS
_.____ Soil maps of the area were obtained from the Soil Conservation Service in
Craig and Steamboat Springs, CO. SCS descriptions .and interpretations
are in the appendix. Sample locations were selected by considering aspect,
slope, vegetation, and previous classification by SCS. Sample sites were
excavated by a backhoe and were dug to a depth of 152 cm (60 in.) or to
) bedrock. Soil profiles were examined and described according. to USDA
Handbook No. 436, Soil_ Taxonomy, 1975. Each soil profile was sampled
(for example, A1, B1, B2t, B3, Cca) and upper horizons were sampled
more intensely than the lower horizons reflecting the importance of the A
horizon as topsoil material for reclamation. Soils were tested for the follow-
ing parameters in accordance with state and federal requirements.
1. pH, paste
2. Electrical Conductivity (mmhos/cm)
3.
