.. ."~`~
z
It makes me SICK -- and SAD -- and MAD that this is continuing. That others
will suffer sinilar loss. That you are unthinkingly perpetuating this
situation!
The gravel in the uppec reaches of the Animas River is not regenerating.
The ice age that brought the glacier that brought the rock probably wont be
returning soon. The damage being done will ruin the Animas River Valley for
generations and generations to come. We will not see improvement, only
further cestruction if the aggregate companies are allowed to operate at
will.
No one would stand by while the hunting outfitters were allowed to hunt
uncheckecl, reaping huge profits, until the very last animal was gone. We can
not stanci by while the aggregate companies operate unchecked until the very
last of t:he beauty of the Animas River Valley is gone!!!!
Remember, aesthetic value does carry a dollar amount (surely you can
understand the $) in an area that's primary industry is tourism. Even the
fathers of old Durango could see far enough ahead to be aware of the need to
protect t:he beauty.
I will be in contact with the individuals and state and federal agencies
that are involved with soil conservation and wildlife management and mined
lands, that already have an ear to this morbid situation--begging if I must,
for help to an end to this destruction of one of La Plata County's most
valuable natural resouces. I will not quit because every day I am reminded
as I lool~:ed towards the river and see the wasteland that was once my beautiful
backyard riverfront!
I appeal to your legal and moral ethics to help to put an end to the
rampant mining of aggregates from the fragile reaches of the Animas River.
I feel that if you do not move on some affirmative action, now, you will always
know that: you missed a chance to really help La Plata County; and you, too,
will be c~eminded of this grave mistake every time you drive North out of
Durango.
Further, in case any of you have not seen the result of this mining,
or would like to see more, I invite you out to my little place on East Animas
We'll take a short (but dangerous) walk out to the river's edge. Maybe
then you will more clearly understand this disgusting situation.
Most Sincerely,
Lana Jo Chapin
