- ' meter. Variance was found to be 0.040. The required sample size at N80
was found to be 11.3 samples. The sample size for the pre-mine herb-
~~ aceous production was considered to be acceptable.
The herbaceous production summary for the barren ridge vegetation type
_ in the pre-mine area is found~in Table 7.
Barren Ridge Reference Area
e 7ota1 Cover. A total of 7 transects were taken on the barren ridge
reference area to evaluate total plant cover. Mean total plant cover of
these transects was found to be 4.0 percent. Variance was found to be
2.67. The required sample size at N80 was found to be 6.83 samples. The
sample size for the barren ridge reference area was considered to be
= acceptable.
The percent plant cover summary for the barren ridge vegetation type in
the reference area is found in Table 5.
-_~
Shrub Density._ A total of 6 transects were taken to evaluate shrub
density on the barren ridge reference area. Mean shrub density of these
transects was found to be 69.33 plants per 50 square meters. The variance
was found to be 29.87. The required sample size at N80 was found to be
0.25 samples. The sample size for the barren ridge reference area was
- therefore considered acceptable.
The shrub density summary for the barren ridge vegetation type in the
reference area is shown in Table 6.
Herbaceous Production. To evaluate herbaceous production on the barren
ridge reference area, 5 transects were clipped. Mean herbaceous produc-
.tion was found to be 0.360 grams per quarter meter squared. The vari-
ance was found to be 0.013. The required sample size at N80 was found
to be 4.11 samples.
