CHIMNEY ROCK COAL
1980 Vegetation Survey
_ •
~~.. •
METH005
A comprehensive vegetation sampling program was conducted from September
17 to 20, 1980, on lands within and surrounding the Chimney Rock Coal
Mine near Chimney Rock, Colorado. This sampling was necessary to
satisfy the requirements of Rule 4.15 of the regulations of the Colorado
Mined land Reclamation Board for coal mining, wherein the vegetation
parameters of herbaceous cover, herbaceous production. woody plant
density and species diversity are quantified. The alternative measures
proposed under Rule 4.15.1 in regards to a pre-mine and reference area
concept were employed. _
A previously-developed vegetation map of the Chimney Rock Mine was used
to delineate existing vegetation types. Reference areas of approximately
3 acres in siie were established for two vegetation communities: the
mountain shrub type and the barren ridge type. Reference areas were not
established for the disturbed type and the pinyon-juniper type because
these types are scheduled to be returned to a pastureland community
following mining; this decision was made following conversations with
the Colorado Mined Land Reclamation Division ("Division"). No data was
collected on a proposed pastureland reference area but a location for
this site was established. The reference areas established for vegeta-
tive comparison are delineated on the Chimney Rock Coal Vegetation Map.*
Quantitative vegetation data were collected for the mountain shrub and
barren ridge types to supplement the qualitative information previously
submittdd'to the Division by Chimney Rock Coal. The techniques utilized
*A rough copy of this map was given to Chimney Rock Coal for their pre-
paration and inclusion in the forthcoming early 1981 permit application.
1
A ~ ~ I2tG.
