DECKER, C.P.G.
62337 VERDE DR,
MONTROSE, CO 61401
1 ~ (970) 249-5683
FAX (970) 249-5683
WestWater Associates, Inc.
Job #603-W
Wiesner
Mrs. Kay Wiesner
61820 Merimac Lane
Montrose, CO 8 ] 401
June 2Q 2003
Re: Preliminary Opinion -Groundwater Impacts of Halderson Proposed Gravel Pit
Dear Mrs. Wiesner:
As per our phone conversations and meetings earlier this week, WestWater Associates
has undertaken a preliminary hydrogeologic evaluation of the proposed 160-acre
Haldorson Gravel Mine, on Spring Creek Mesa. You requested we review portions of
their application for permit to the Colorado Division of Minerals and Geology, CMLRB,
and Montrose County. You directed us to conduct field inspections, water right and
registered well location and adjudication, review and inspect the property to determine if
the proposed excavation would impact existing water resources on the Mesa.
We have resided on Spring Creek Mesa for 25 years and have investigated groundwater
conditions in numerous areas for subdivision applications, gravel pits, septic
contamination and ditch and canal losses. We have been, and are currently, retained by
gravel operators to advise them as to groundwater impacts and litigation, reclamation and
pit stability. In addition, we have assisted in water rights and evaluation of additional
water for Silver Springs Trout Farm {located 1/3 mile east of the proposed pit),
supervised construction of alluvial wells along LaSalle Road, which supply a lazge
mobile home park, and observed the irrigation diversion and application of irrigation
water practices on the Mesa for many years.
The pit is'proposed for location on the east half, east half, Section 24, T49N, R10W,
NMPM. It is bounded on the north by LaSalle Road, west by 6175 Road and south by
relatively new subdivision of larger than average homes. The pit would be bounded on
the east by the Dean Ranch on the southern '/< of the pit, and the Nation's "Hillside
Homestead", along the northern '/, mile. The property currently is irrigated farm ground,
and one of the larger contiguous operational farms left on the mesa. The, current owner is
the George family. The ground surface slopes gently from southwest to north and
northeast, with irrigation water being derived from the CJ and CJN Laterals. Irrigation
water is spread via row crops and/or flood irrigation in a northerly and northeasterly
direction. The Dean Ranch to the east contains approximately 100 acres of imgated farm
ground. The entire land parcel west of 6175 Road is similar in nature in that it is all
irrigated pasture and cropland. Again, the ground slopes gently from southwest to
northeast toward the pit.
