S
Work Plan for Alluvial Groundwater Characterrzatron, Big Elk Mine Adrianerown
The 3/4-inch diameter wells will be developed using a 3/4-inch surge block, attached to 3/8-inch rigid
pipe. The wells will be surged using the surge block and pumped using a foot valve to remove fines
from the well screen and formation immediately near the screen.
Water quality pazameters, including temperature, pH, conductivity, and turbidity, will be monitored
during well development. Wells will be developed until field pazameters stabilize and the dischazge
water is visibly cleaz.
Development will achieve the following results:
• Rectify drilling effects, including clogging, smearing, or compaction of formation materials at
borehole wall;
• Rectify drilling effects on hydraulic conductivity (such as localized zones of lower hydraulic
conductivity); and
• Remove fines from the formation adjacent to borehole and/or from the filter pack, for the
purpose of reducing or eliminating turbidity in future samples and minimizing potential for
clogging and damaging pump equipment.
Well Surveying.
After drilling and completion, well elevations (top of casing) and ground surface elevations will be first
estimated from 7.5-minute topographic maps, and will subsequently be surveyed. A measuring point on
the north side of the casing will be mazked or cut into the top of the casing.
4.4 Collect Water Level Data
Water level elevations will be measured from the north side of the PVC casing, according to standard
operating procedures. Water levels will be monitored monthly, beginning in February, 1998, in all
alluvial monitoring wells.
' 4.5 Collect Water Quality Data
4.5.1 Monthly Water Quality Measurements
Field pazameters (temperature, pH, and conductivity) will be measured monthly in all wells, in
conjunction with monthly water level sampling, beginning in February. 1998. This sampling will be
performed in conjunction with monthly water level measurements, which will be taken first. Wells will
be purged by submersible pump, inertial pump, or bailer until parameters stabilize, before monthly field
' pazameters are measured.
4.5.2 Quarterly Water Quality Sampling
l Water quality samples will be collected quarterly for laboratory analysis, beginning during the Winter
quarter (February, 1998). The wells will be sampled according to standard procedures for environmental
groundwater sampling.
' Project 1463C.98o223 6
