6.4.10 Exhibit J -Vegetation Information <br />• 6.4.10.1 EXISTING VEGETATION TYPES <br />Vegetation in the study area is mostly crops, including wheat, alfalfa, irrigated <br />hay, and trees. About 13 acres is a wet pasture (See Exhibit C), which contains <br />several areas dominated by wetland vegetation, primarily Nebraska sedge <br />(Carex nebraskensis) and Baltic rush (Juncus balticus). However, hydrologic <br />conditions in the pasture during a May 7, 2004 site visit were not typical of <br />wetlands. Wetland conditions in the pasture are apparently supported by <br />irrigation. A 1.7-acre marsh is present on the west boundary of the proposed <br />permit area adjacent to the abandoned railroad bed (See Exhibit C). About 1.1 <br />acres of this wetland are within the proposed permit area. Vegetation in the <br />marsh is dominated by cattails (Typha spp.), with limited amounts of teasel <br />(Dipsacus ful/onum) present around the wetland margins. <br />• <br />6.4.10.2 PRODUCTIVITY <br />Table 6 (below) presents the potential primary productivity within the permit area <br />based on native vegetation that occurs on the soil types present. Two soil types, <br />Olney fine sandy loam, 0 to 1 percent slopes and Vona sandy loam, 1 to 3 <br />percent slopes, are almost always used for irrigated agriculture. Productivity of <br />native vegetation is not presented for these soil types (USDA Soil Conservation <br />Service, 1980). See Exhibit C for a map of soils within the permit area. <br />Table 6.
