• TAB 8
CLIMATOLOGICAL INFORMATION
Introduction
Tab B describes the climatology of the proposed Yoast Mine area. This information is provided to fulfill the
requirements of the Colorado Mined Land Reclamation Board regulations, Rule 2, Section 4.8. Summarized data
in Tab 8 includes: 1) normal mean monthly precipitation; 2) normal mean monthly temperatures; 3) mean monthly
temperatures and temperature ranges; 4) average speed and direction of the prevailing winds.
Normal precipitation and temperature data were derived from the NOAA Weather Station at Hayden, Colorado,
located approximately eight miles northwest of the mine site. The Hayden Station has a 68 year record of
temperature and a 74 year record of precipitation data. Average temperature and wind data were derived from
data collected by Peabody Coal Company at the nearby Seneca II-W mine site between January 1981 and
December 1986 and between January 1992 and December 1993. Only complete calendar year periods will be
presented in the discussions which follow. Parameters include ambient air temperature, wind speed and wind
direction. No reliable preciptation data has been collected on the proposed permit area, and no temperature range
or wind data are available from the Hayden Station.
• Precipitation and Temperature
Table 8-1 summarizes monthly precipitation and temperature normals for the Hayden Station based upon standard
averages derived for the period of record. These data were obtained from "Climatological Data Annual Summary;
Colorado 1992", National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
Table 8-2 summarizes the temperature data collected at the meteorological station located at the Seneca II-W
mine site. The data includes daily average, daily maxima, daily minima and inferred ranges of temperature by
month for the eight calendar year period of record.
Wind Speed and Wind Direction
As previously noted, eight complete years of meteorological data is available from the Seneca II-W Mine
meteorological station, and no wind speed or wind direction data is available from the Hayden station. The nearest
station for which the National Climatic Center does report surface winds cannot be relied upon to provide a
reasonable indication of winds at the proposed Yoast Mine site. This is due mainly to the tact that the surface
winds are highly dependent upon the topography.
The meteorological station at the Seneca II-W Mine area is located in the south one-haM of Section 16, T6N,
R88W, about 500-600 feet east of Hubberson Gulch (see Figure 8-1 ). Elevation at the site is approximately 6,850
feet MSL with sensor height at 33 feet AGL.
r 1
J
