06032 Banks and Gesso, LLC
and F). The volume of overburden stockpiles, as depicted on plans, represents the
volume of overburden and waste material generated in initial mining operations prior to
the point in time when areas of completed mineral recovery will be available as a
repository for overburden and waste rock according to the Reclamation Plan.
Mining Method
To perform extraction activities, the Applicant will mobilize equipment to the site on an
annual basis. Typical equipment will include scrapers, a bulldozer (for both ripping and
pushing material), and support equipment (e.g., fueling and maintenance vehicles).
Scrapers will construct a ramp or ramps to progressively extract layers of clay and other
rock, cycling around the site to benches or unexcavated rim areas, where material will
be unloaded in stockpiles. Once clay has been fully recovered in an area, the stockpiled
overburden and waste will be pushed over benches and graded to achieve reclamation
contours.
Water Diversions and Impoundments
The site has several existing impoundments, both relics and maintained as stock water
ponds. Within the affected area, livestock operations will be excluded as mining
progresses across the site, and all existing impoundments within the affected area will
be phased out contemporaneously with mining phases. There are no ditches or other
water-related improvements within the affected area. The proposed clay mine has no on-
site water demands for processing or other activities.
See Exhibit G for additional discussion of water resources
Blasting and Chemicals
The amount of mechanical force supplied by the equipment described above is sufficient
to loosen and extract the various clays and other rock located on the site. No blasting is
necessary, as operations are similar to sand and gravel operations in terms of
equipment needs.
No processing will take place on-site and clay mining does not require any specific
chemical processing, Therefore no chemical agents of any type are anticipated for use or
storage on the site. A diesel fuel tank may be mobilized with mining equipment for
The Denver Brick Company January 2007
Kiowa Clay Mine Page 7
