Corn, soybeans, small
grain, and hay aze the principal crops. Some small areas remain in native vegetation and provide wildife
habitat and some areas aze in urban use. Native vegetation was tall grass prairie with scattered oak
groves.
DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: West-central and southwestern Wisconsin, southern Minnesota,
northern Illinois, and possibly northeastern Iowa. The series is of moderate extent.
MLRA OFFICE RESPONSIBLE: St. Paul, Minnesota
SERIES ESTABLISHED: Dakota County, Minnesota, 194].
REMARKS: The responsibility of the Dakota series was transferred from Minnesota to Wisconsin in
June 1978, since pedons sampled in Minnesota did not have evidence of an argillic horizon. Data from
Dakota pedons in Wisconsin indicate the presence of an argillic horizon. The concept of the Volinia
series is under study to see if it can be distinguished from the Dakota series. Volinia is now Pachic
Argiudoll.
Diagnostic horizons and features recognized in this pedon are: Mollic epipedon -the zone from surface
of soil to depth of 14 inches (Ap, A horizons). Argillic horizon -zone from approximately 14 to 31
inches (A, Btl, Bt2, 2Bt3 horizons). Udic moisture regime. The base saturation in the sandy outwash has
increased due to fertilization and liming.
ADDITIONAL DATA: Refer to soil survey sample number S77WI-111-001 for data on the typifying
pedon.
National Cooperative Soil Survey
U.S.A.
http://www.statlab.iastate.edu/soils/osd/dat/D/DAKOTA.html 7/16/02
