2 Carefully monitor the activities of the owls, noting and marking which buaows they are asing. The
owls may use several burrows in a prairie dog town.. This is not easy to accomplish and will require considerable
time. When all active Burrowing Owl burrows have been located and masked, activity can proceed in areas greater
than 156 feet from Burmwiag Owl burrows with little danger to the owls, Activity close: than 150 feet may
endanger the owls.
the Colorado Division of Wildlife would also like to take this opportunity to raise the issue of possible
impacts to Gunnison sage-grouse (Centrocercus minimus), Up until the late 1980's, this species occupied the
sagebrush flats aznund the Nucla ahpott No confnmed sightings have been reported since that time, but the
potential does exist for them to remain in the immediate azea. Although this species was recently removed from the
Fedetai I&E "Candidate" list, their populations are closely monirored and the Gunnison sage-grouse remains an
ongoing management priority for both the US Fish & Wildlife Service and the CDOW
If Western Fuels should choose to undertake mining in either the Second or Third Pazk areas around
Nucla, the CDOW would welcome the opportunity to discuss wildlife avoidance or mitigation measures for
Gunnison sage-grouse, mule deer and other wildlife species at the eazliest opportunity in the planning process.
If you have any questions or need fot further information, please contact the Montrose office of the
Colorado Division of Wildlife at (9'70} 252-6000
Sincerely, (~
C~~~c-~o~-O
Renzo DelPiccolo
Area Wildlife Manager -Montrose
Colorado Division of Wildlife
