r~
2.05.4 (?) and 4.14 Backfilling and Grading
Walden Coal Company has done several surveys [o determine
the amount of overburden available to backfill the existing pit.
The latest was conducted in 1982 and it was determined, at that
time, [hat an estimated swell factor of 23$ was conservative. The
"additional area of coal" referred to by Robillard and Associates,
Inc. in their letter dated June 1, 198'2, was located within the
designated mining area and cvas not significant with regard to
the amount of additional overburden which will be required to
backfill the area. Walden Coal Company therefore stands by its
statement, on page F-~ of the permit, that if changes need to
be made to the post-mine contours when reclamation begins, at
the end of Stage 9, a revised plan will be submitted to the Division
for approval prior to implementation.
4.05.13 Ground Water Quality Monitoring Data
L~
All required ground water monitoring data will be submitted
to the Division as it becomes available. See attached for results
from March 1983 through June 1985. It should be noted that most
of the wells have become dry since the onset of mining. As a
result, quarterly water quality samples have been collected from
wells adjacent to monitoring wells where necessary and possible.
There has been no evidence of water quality deterioration resulting
from the mining operation.

(3)
