Stations were sited according to the proposed
mine layou[ and subsequently monitored monthly for field parameters and quatterly for anahtical
parameters. At each station a crest gauge, sediment sampler, and alluvial monitor well were
installed (see [he Groundwa[er Technical Report). In addition, each si[e was surveyed for cross-
sections as described above. Specific methodologies related to water quality standards
determination, field parameters collection, and water quality sampling are described below.
Applicable water quality standards were determined from a review of the Colorado Depattment
of Heal[h- Water Quality Control Commission Classification and Numeric Standards for the
Arkansas River Basin. The particular drainages in the project area tall within the lower Arkansas
River Basin, stream segment Sa. Comparison of analytical results from the site sampling da[a is
made to these standards. The water quality monitoring program was designed ro determine
baseline conditions above and below projec[ed disturbance areas.
Sampling and Analytical Methodology
• During each monthly event, readings were obtained from crest gauges and flows determined at
each station. Sediment samplers were examined for water collection. At each site field
parameters were obtained at stations with water. Field parameters were determined either via a
Hydac pH/conductivity/temperature meter, or an Orion pH/temperature meter and an Orion
conductivity/temperature meter immediately at each monitoring station in accordance with 40CFR
136. Dissolved oxygen measurements were obtained utilizing a YSI model SOB dissolved oxygen
meter. Each of the sampled parameters were detetmined by obtaining a sample of the water with
a decontaminated beaker, and placing the probes in this sample for measurement. Samples were
obtained from flowing water where possible. Decontamination of all equipment was performed
by tirst rinsing the equipment with tap water, then washing with aphosphate-tree detergent, then
rinsing the equipmen[ with deionized water.
Samples were obtained using the laboratory provided sampling containers. where possible. Each
container was lowered in[o the water and filled gently, wi[hout rinsing out the preservative. For
samples requiring field filtration, filtration vas accomplished by use of a barrel filter with a 0.45
micron filter. Preservation and filtrations were performed according to Table S~V-1.
•
,~; ,-: o,,..,,,,.h«,. ,~,,,,, 4 i revised 6/30/97)
