Dept. of Natural Resources
Critical habitats/vegetative communities impacted:
Loss of many cottonwood trees and riparian habitat along Eagle River and ditch:
Loss of sagebrush areas that provide deer winter range
Assessment of impact:
Ioss of critical winter range is important particularly from a cumulative point of view.
in this area. Riparian habitat is the highest quality type habitat in the State. All
bald eagle habitat is important.
Mine Reclamation recommendations (include key species/habitats for which restoration
is designed).
We recommend that riparian, cottonwood, and sagebrush habitats be reestablished.
1) Replace cottonwood trees on at least a 1:1 basis to the number of cottonwood
trees removed. Plantings should be along the river and along the ditch.
2) Sagebrush habitat should be replaced on an acre for acre basis. Included
in the sagebrush plantings could be other important shrub forage species
such as bitterbrush, serviceberry, and mountain mahogany. This would enhance
the winter range habitat value and help offset the loss of habitat that will
occur while the mine is in operation.
3) Replace riparian habitats on an acre for acre basis. Willows should be
included in the revegetation. We would be happy to assist in identifying
riparian areas that will be impacted and in developing a replacement plan.
Revegetation work should be done concurrent with mining. This will minimize impact
to wildlife. Establishment of tree and shrub plantings should be more successful
Prepared by• Bill Heicher, Craig Wescott Date: August 12, 1986 (continued)
Submitted by: Bill Elmblad~~ ~~,,,~~~ Date: August 20, 1986
This statement is void if not processed within one year.
This analysis does not constitute approval of application.
~~ ~3 ~®
REV.l-7-82 Page 2 of 2
